My continued responses to what’s been happening to our world since January 2025. I’ve been returning to this theme periodically, in different media and different styles, but so far always with the same inspiration or intent - trying to see or anticipate some speck of hope (red lotus) in an otherwise dark bleak world (black mire). The phrase is from my copy of “The Sutra of Hui Neng”.
A red lotus, although born within black mire, matures to defy it. As each of us with respect, stability, ethical lawfulness, and love defy the corruption, cruelty and violence surrounding us. In these paintings, (C,D,E), the light source is within the lotus, as it is within each of us.
