Passages
The Passages series brings together several phenomena that have fascinated me for most of my life and which I had treated separately in earlier work (i.e. Night Spaces, Rooms). These phenomena are light and movement through space. I enjoy creating space on 2-d surfaces.
With the Passages series my palette increased, as did my fascination with old wall textures, occasionally present in miscellaneous older works such as Asylum. Enamored of these textures and tonal effects made possible by the oil paint atop silver etching ink and handmade paper, I included the element of time (via wall textures and states of decay) and the aspect of human-made spaces. These spaces are often rough and ancient, meant to embody some of the relationship between man and the earth that he shapes.
All the Passage paintings have a layer of silver etching ink underneath the painted areas. This protects the paper from destruction by the oil. The paper is handmade, from Dieu Donné paper mill in New York City.
